IJill Barron is a lifelong student of horsemanship and equitation, the horse being her greatest teacher. She believes horses have a universal language and our job as riders, is to learn how to speak and understand this language. Through a blend of classical dressage techniques and natural horsemanship, her focus is encouraging a deeper connection between horse and rider. All disciplines. All levels.

Barron is Canada’s most decorated Working Equitation rider and is an International Working Equitation competitor, Clinician and Judge. Her recent accomplishments include Championships at Haras Cup, Cross Nations Cup (Advanced), Andalusian World Cup (Advanced), Western Canada Regional Champion (Masters) and WEUSA National High Point Reserve Champion (Masters).

Jill empowers riders by equipping them with the skills and confidence to enhance their partnership with their equine. Her instruction aligns with the training goals for individual riders. She shares knowledge that is transformative and embraces positivity.

The History of Working Equitation

Working Equitation (WE) is a relatively modern equestrian discipline that originated in the 1990s in Southern Europe, particularly Portugal, Spain, Italy, and France. It was developed to celebrate and preserve the skills, traditions, and versatility of the working horses used in everyday ranch and fieldwork across these regions.

The discipline was formally recognized in 1996 with the first international competition held in Italy. Shortly afterward, the World Association for Working Equitation (WAWE) was established to promote the sport globally and unify rules and standards.

WE combines classical dressage with practical, real-world obstacles and cattle work, reflecting the demands placed on working horses in rural life. The sport typically includes four phases:

Dressage – judged on precision, harmony, and classical training.

Ease of Handling (Obstacle) Trial – a timed test over obstacles simulating ranch work.

Speed Trial – a fast-paced version of the obstacle course.

Cattle Trial – team work to separate and pen cattle (used in team competitions only).

Over the past two decades, Working Equitation has expanded worldwide, gaining popularity in the Americas, UK, and Australia, and is appreciated for its inclusivity of all breeds and riding styles, including classical, Western, and traditional European.

Today, it is a growing international sport that blends tradition, horsemanship, and competition in a unique and respectful tribute to the working horse.

I thoroughly enjoyed my clinic with Jill Barron. Jill’s ability to teach all levels of riders and horses is top quality. She can explain her techniques so everyone can achieve them. If you are struggling, Jill takes the time to work with you and help you achieve your goals. At the end of the day Jill wants you and your horse to be true partners in whatever you choose to do. I learn so much riding with Jill-she has a depth of knowledge and is great at explaining it in a way that helps me learn. Her enthusiasm for the sport of Working Equitation is inspiring and I love riding with her!

A special mare introduced us, but the love of horses, learning, and goal chasing firmed our friendship. I purchased a literal unicorn from Jill and she has stayed by our side through all the learning, coaching, and hand holding. Jill has a clear gift to teach, push when needed, and to soften gently nudging baby steps forward in hard moments. With clear instruction and a knack to refine and polish your ride she will have you riding your best and pushing to do better.
